Barnes & Nobel launches a tablet on May 24. B&N is abandoning the e-ink-only strategy – designed for only reading – in favor of taking on the iPad with a more feature-rich tablet and access to Apps. It’s not forsaking the $249 Nook Color which is getting a software update to handle email and games. It is expected to be more of a tablet device designed to take on both Amazon Kindle and Apple iPad. B&N also released a firmware update to its Android powered Nook Color device to support Adobe Flash, improve the browser and add app store access…
It’s no longer a rumor – Amazon is developing its own tablet to push its digital content. Quanta, the leading manufacturer of components for portable devices, has received orders for an Android-based device and will have it out by fall. Amazon is working with E Ink Holdings for the touch panel and display. New technology will allow for clear text, graphics and more contrast so, like the Kindle, the tablet would be readable during the day. Amazon is making the move to boost global sales. While Kindle sells well in the U.S., it isn’t as popular overseas.
