Blackberry Playbook: Serious Fun

By Livia Bergovoy

Research In Motion (RIM) a.k.a. Blackberry unveiled their tablet in New York City. Rim named their entry the Playbook. Clever name for a serious business oriented company. The Playbook truly covers the spectrum from serious to playful. The Playbook has a 1GHz dual core processor, 1 GB ram, is smoothly multi tasking, a hefty 0.9 lbs (425 g) and feels quite sturdy. We are really happy with the  7 inch screen which is easy to handle. Great sound and breathtaking vivid color can be experienced with the on board demo video. The type pad is a really good size. The interface is very user-friendly – we needed only a few fun filled minutes with the tablet before we were able to flick around from Youtube to multiple web browswer sessions. All sessions – Playbook apps as well as Internet sessions – remain running, waiting to be gotten back to until the user decides to exit.

On the serious side, Excel and Word are available. On the playful end a nice old fashioned yet flickable Tetris. And NFS Undercover which is a racecar driving “game” where you can cruise through streets at 200 mph – great for getting it out of your system before you hit the actual roadways.

There is a lot do with this tablet. Even Rim doesn’t have much information yet. Nevertheless, the Playbook is up and running and fun and easy to run with. On sale and ready for pre-order at Bestbuy.
