I have been in the consumer technology business so long that sometimes I get jaded the umpteenth time someone introduces the next easiest way to network your home entertainment content or shows off a security camera that lets you watch your Golden Retriever eat the couch or your new baby bibble. The leading security companies, including Schlage, Panasonic and ADT, don’t produce a mass market security product that you can easily install yourself. In reality, they usually require a third party installer or two solid days on the phone with tech support. In my experience, their products are difficult to install and operate no matter how adept you are at whole house network sharing or wireless home computing.

Between my family, my friends and even a few frenemies that needed a bit of audio-video-computer home networking advice, I had to deal with Panasonic, Linksys, Sony, Nintendo, Brother, Kodak, Epson, LG, Schlage Lock Co., HP, Sharp, Verizon, Cablevision and several other manufacturers or service providers whose products had to be installed or were acting up and required technical support.

By Richard Sherwin... Several years ago we trashed Wal-Mart’s home spun self branded TVs, stereos and other consumer electronics. Some of these were manufactured so poorly and not even priced that much lower than the budget brands, that we opined that the world’s largest retailer was really trying to win out the uninformed and then screw them royally with some of the worst made products we had ever seen. Last year Best Buy started selling several TVs, an HD radio and a handful of other products to several “Eh” reviews from industry experts.
